Foster wasn’t standing close enough to Shayley and Lyon to overhear their exchange. However, he could tell they were talking about him with the way her gorgeous blue gaze kept drifting his way. His brain was still reeling from her declaration of love.

Man, but he had an awful lot of reasons to stay on the straight and narrow these days! Lord, help me be worthy of her. Foster knew he wasn’t worthy, of course — far from it, but he sure as heck wanted to be.

Brody waved him back over as he was lifting Star inside the truck to join Shayley. “We never got to talk shop tonight. Want me to stay until the police get here?”

“I appreciate the offer, but I’d feel better if you escorted the ladies back.”

Brody nodded. “Not that I want you to, but you’re probably going to have to cut your hours way back at my ranch.” He glanced around them. “You’re needed here.”

“Yeah. Sorry about that.” Foster knew he probably should have adjusted his schedule a month ago. If he had, maybe things wouldn’t have gotten so out of hand next door.

“I hate giving you up, but you have your own business to run now.”

“I do.” Foster swung out a hand. “Thanks for giving me a job and a place to stay when I needed it. And health insurance. I’ll never be able to repay you. Not in a million years.” All that aside, Brody was right. It was time for him to resign and move on to the next adventure.

Brody nodded. “If you need help setting up employee benefits and stuff, just give Matt a holler. He’s our resident human resources expert.”

“Thanks. I might just do that.” Foster was looking forward to making a number of changes to K&G Security’s policies. Instead of being a cash-only operation with a hodgepodge of paramilitary employees, he was in the middle of filing articles of incorporation with the state of Texas. He was also working on getting a company website set up, business cards printed, and a few advertisements run in the newspapers of a dozen or so surrounding towns. Next on his agenda would be running background checks on all his current employees. It would probably require letting a few more of them go, but he and Lyon would cross that bridge when they came to it.

He watched the camouflage truck drive away, thankful that Shayley and Sam were heading to safer ground. Within twenty minutes, Officer Emmitt McCarty roared up in his patrol car, siren blaring and lights flashing. He turned off the noise makers as he slid from behind the wheel, though he kept his red and blue flashers going.

“Feels like I’m becoming a regular visitor around here, Foster Kane,” the policeman drawled. “Hope you eventually plan to invite me to stay for BBQ.” He was tall and lean, built like a runner. Rubbing a hand across his dark goatee, he surveyed the smoke tendrils still curling from the windows of Foster’s cabin. “Looks like you’ve had some excitement this evening.
